Road Test

Ferrari 430 Scuderia

Test date 23 July 2008  Price as tested £172,605

The twin effects of increased power and reduced weight are enough to merit the Scuderia a promotion in performance classification. With 333bhp per tonne the standard F430 is brisk but it stops just short of true supercar status. But the 373bhp-per-tonne Scuderia makes the grade; 7.4sec is all it takes to reach 100mph. Below 100mph the Scuderia will reach 60mph in just 3.4sec.

The performance gap between the Scuderia and the regular F430 is even more evident on the road. Although the headline figure of 347lb ft suggests that the Scuderia gains just 3lb ft over the F430, at an identical 5250rpm, that’s far from the entire picture.

In making the Scuderia’s V8 breathe more freely Ferrari has bolstered the 347lb ft of torque either side of the 5250rpm peak output, particularly from 2000-5000rpm. It remains an engine that likes to rev but no longer needs to in order to deliver an immediate sense of speed.

A blast down the most challenging roads Britain can muster shows that the people at Modena still know how to make a car handle; the Scuderia behaves brilliantly. So high are the levels of mechanical grip at either axle that few will ever breach them on the road. But the 430’s abilities run deeper than simple adhesion and corner speed. The level of feedback, precision and confidence makes the Scuderia exceptionally enjoyable to drive.

Although the ride in the default ‘race’ setting on the manettino is busy, it is not uncomfortable. But the fluidity and comfort in the softer setting better suits Britain’s roads. This ability to flow across tumbling roads with exceptional body control and then turn with such agility makes it akin to a larger, faster Lotus Elise.

And the similarities do not end there, for the quick, light and precise steering could be that of a power-assisted Lotus. While sharing the same DNA as the standard F430, it is vastly improved, feeling more natural to operate, if still a touch too light.
