Road Test
Peugeot 207 GTi
Test Date 30 May 2007
Price When New £15,495
Verdict
The 207 GTi’s appeal as a driver’s car is well represented by its price point and power output: it’s pretty much slap in the middle of the current junior hot hatchback brigade. And as enthusiasts we have to admit that we find it disappointing, though no longer surprising, that Peugeot’s hot hatches tick more boxes in the ‘hatchback’ than the ‘hot’ parts of their job description.
Although the 207 does few things downright badly, it simply doesn’t do enough things with enough conviction for us to make a case for it on any grounds. It is reasonable value. It is reasonably fast. It is reasonably spacious and has a mildly better-than-reasonable interior.
But when a Corsa VXR, Clio 197, Mini Cooper S and Ford Fiesta ST are all more entertaining to drive, it’s a pretty hard sell. And it isn’t going to get any better: after all, a car that is merely average when new tends not to improve with age.
