Turbocharged, four cylinder Boxster to get 200bhp

The next Porsche Boxster will feature a four-cylinder engine for the first time, Stuttgart insiders have said. Few details are known about the entry-level Boxster, but it is “the most economical Porsche ever” according to company sources. Porsche’s most economical models are currently the 2.7-litre Boxster and Cayman, which emits 222g/km of CO2.The turbocharged engine is likely to offer just over 200bhp, and next Boxster is expected to be significantly lighter than its predecessor. Expect this entry-level model in 2011.

It's 3.4 these days Teg, but apart fom that I have to agree with you. It also probably explains why Porsche had the VW roadster canned recently.

If they drop in a VAG 4 cylinder it will be a repeat of the 924/944/968 story or even the 914. Good cars that everyone will say are not real Porsches beacuse of the engine.

The 944 and 968 engines were Porsche's own engine and both most definitely are real Porsche's no matter what anyone says.

You are correct though, if they out source the power plant then yes people will complain and the whole "not a real Porsche" will start all over again.

Hopefully the plan is to lop a couple of cylinders off the 3.2 unit design and work from there.

It has to happen doesn't it? All manufacturers will need to reduce their ranges overall CO2 emissions, why not make a good light (ish) car even lighter. 4 cylinder engines would be lighter than the present six anyway. No matter what porsche owners (or the fantasisers) say, and I speak as a Boxster S owner, a good lightweight car will be a winner. Think of all the RS models Porsche have produced.

I agree the use of exotic materials will only add to cost, Mazda have shown the way with the new '2', cars can be safe and light and affordable and stil be exciting and good to drive.

Bring it on I say!
