Car sales chaos forces company to cut production

BMW is to cut nearly a thousand jobs at its Mini plant at Cowley, Oxford, the company announced this morning.

The cutbacks will affect agency workers and BMW has said that there are currently no plans to make permanent staff redundant.

The company closed the plant for four weeks over Christmas, in response to the turmoil in the car sales market, and had recently announced a one-week halt in production that begins today.

The Mini, which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary later this year, has been a colossal success for BMW.

BMW sold 70,405 cars (BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce) last month, a drop of nearly 25 per cent on the previous period.
