Lebanese property developer pays record sum for numberplate

The personalised UK registration plate '1 D' has sold for a record £285,000.

Lebanese property developer Nabil Bishara bought the plate at a DVLA auction in Warwickshire for his wife. He will fit it to her Bentley as a surprise present.

The cost of the plate rises to £352,411 with fees and VAT.

The sum beat the DVLA's previous record of £254,000 for the registration 51 NGH in 2006.
