The announcement was made as part of GM’s two-year product plan for its four core brands – Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC.

Production of the Chevrolet Corvette C7 will begin in April 2012 for the 2013 model year.

GM confirmed the C7 would retain the Corvette’s front-engine, rear-drive layout. The C7 is expected to have a smaller and lighter body, which makes use of carbonfibre and aluminium in order to keep its weight down.

A smaller engine could also feature, but a lighter weight would increase the car’s power-to-weight ratio. It has also been rumoured that a supercharger could be fitted to the engine.
