Firm could make sporty diesel variant if there's demand

Volkswagen could bring out a GTD variant of its new Polo, according to a company source.

A VW Golf GTD has recently been launched with the intention of offering GTI looks and performance, with the economy and emissions of a diesel model, and the Polo could receive the same treatment in the future.

New VW Polo GTI

“We wouldn’t rule it out,” the source told Autocar. “It’s still early days for the new Polo. The diesel mix isn’t as strong in the supermini segment but should there be significant demand for it, we would consider it.”

The GTI version of the Polo will be launched in the spring and it will be powered by a turbocharged and supercharged 1.4-litre petrol engine.

The five-door model has now gone on sale in the UK and the three-door model will follow later this year. Other Polo models in the range should include a baby SUV called CrossPolo, a convertible and an estate.

Re: VW Polo GTD 'not ruled out'

This is another Autocar story thats not actually true, reminds me of the one when they said BMW were planning to put the 120D engine in the MINI...

In this case VAG internal rules means the 2.0 TDI can't go in anything smaller than a Golf, so the biggest diesel available for the Polo is the 1.6 TDI, and thats only 105bhp, so hardly worthy of the GTD moniker.

The Polo GTI info on the other hand is completely true, as it wil indeed feuture the twicharged 1.4 TSI as found in the Seat Ibiza cupra.

Ooh, I can hardly wait! The world's most exciting, stylish and softly plasticed supermini enhanced with a diesel engine. Worth every panny of a year's salary in my book!

As there was a big market for the Fabia VRS, the question must be 'is there a market for for a Skoda Fabia VRS with a £2,500 premium for a VW badge?'
