Special edition model will celebrate Kris Meeke's IRC win - but it won't be a hot hatch

Peugeot is planning a special edition 207 to celebrate British driver Kris Meeke’s win in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

But anyone hoping for a lightweight hot hatch in the style of the 106 and 306 Rallye models will be disappointed, the Meeke version will be based on a low-powered 207 in the range.

Meeke's IRC victory would have been the ideal opportunity for Peugeot to produce a new iconic hot hatch, but the firm has instead ruled out any future hot hatches - including GTIs - and will instead focus on sporty coupes.

The most likely model for the Meeke edition to be based on is the 74bhp 1.4-litre 207, in a bid to attract young buyers, although the 1.6 model could also form the basis for the special edition.

A lower powered model has been chosen as it would cost younger drivers less to insure and be more affordable to buy. It will be a long way removed from previous rally special editions from manufactuers, including Subaru and Mitsubishi, to celebrate their drivers' success in rallying.

Subaru released special edition Imprezas to celebrate the title wins of Colin McRae and Richard Burns, while Mitsubishi released a special edition Evo VI in honour of Tommi Makkinen, which is still regarded as the best Evo ever.

A Peugeot source said the Meeke edition would feature rally livery and is expected to have a number of other sporty options included.

Earlier this year, Citroen launched a new special C4 to celebrate Sebastien Loeb's continued success in the World Rally Championship.

This model was similar in concept to the proposed Meeke edition, being based on 1.6-litre petrol and diesel C4s.

Maiking it a low powered version is an insult to what Kris Meele has achieved. A lighhtweight "Rallye" type version is what we want. As said above, if you cvan afford to by the car, the insurance shouldn't be a problem

Didn't Honda announce something similar with the Civic a while ago? Low power, cheaper insurance but a £15k+ purchase price.

Where are these young people that struggle with insurance premiums but can afford £15k to spend on a car?

Re: Peugeot plans 207 Meeke edition

Odd how relaxed Peugeot seems to be about abandoning its fine GTI heritage. They might regret that.
