Firm wants to strengthen motorsport ties with 2.0-litre global engine

VW’s R&D boss has denied that the company is about to embark on making Formula One engines.

But Ulrich Hackenberg has revealed that the company is keen on getting more involved with lower formulas of motorsport.

Speaking to Autocar at the LA motor show, Hackenberg said: "There’s been no concrete decision [on Formula One] but we are developing a global 2.0-litre engine for different racing categories.

"They can be used in different states of tune. It’s important that we can demonstrate our technology, and our tech is diesel and TSI."
