Luxury coupe spied in winter testing; on-sale later this year

Audi’s luxury A7 coupe has been spied in winter testing ahead of its launch later this year.

The A7 will provide Audi with a rival to the BMW 5-series GT and Mercedes CLS and it will slot into its range between the A6 and A8.

Autocar drove the Sportback concept late last year and Audi's head of exterior design, Achim-D Badstubner, said the Sportback's shape is as close as concepts get to production sign-off.

The A7’s mechanicals are a blend of A6 and A8; the floorpan will be from the next A6, and its wheelbase is identical. The engines are common to both models already and the A7 will use them too.

The interior, however, will more closely resemble the model higher up the Audi range.

Prices are set to start at around £40,000.

Based on the success of the Mercedes CLS, which is virtually exactly the same concept, as well as the new Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide, I would expect that the market for the A7 is large enough. The BMW 5 GT, on the other hand, is more of an experiment, as it is a different sort of thing altogether.

Re: Audi A7 spied

Audi just seem to be filling the holes in the model name line. Soon you'll be able to count to ten in Audis.

Or it could be they are having a 'my model range is bigger than yours' competition with BMW.

I can understand why they would release the A5, as I quite like the concept, if not the execution. However I wonder about the size of the market for the A7, and the same is true of the 5 GT.

Re: Audi A7 spied

If they didn't disguise it, would anyone know it isn't an A5 Sportback?
