New model celebrates 50 years since Corvette first entered Le Mans

Corvette is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first Le Mans entry with the release of the new Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.

The car’s chief engineer Tadge Juechter says the special edition model “couples the lightweight and naturally-aspirated Z06 engine with the road-holding and braking of the ZR1”.

The track-focused model boasts Brembo carbon ceramic brakes, new 20-spoke wheels, a Magnetic Selective Ride Control system and extensive use of carbonfibre in its bodywork to keep weight.

Corvette claims that on technical tracks such as Laguna Seca, the new Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off a standard Z06’s lap time.

The Z06 Carbon also features a leather and suede interior which includes a unique steering wheel emblem, sill plate and headrest.

Only 500 examples will be made but some of the cars features will be available as an upgrade package for the upcoming 2011 Z06. The Z06 Carbon Limited Edition, as well as the Z06 option package will be available in the US later in the summer.

Re: Corvette launches special Z06

Never been a US car fan but the Corvette always feels special to me despite the iffy build quality, 2nd rate interior materials and the plastic body parts. Who else in this day can get away with cart springs as an accomplished suspension set up?

Love it.
