Hot Audis go head-to-head on the Autocar test track

Autocar has pitted the Audi R8 V10 against the Audi TT RS on its track test to find out which is faster.

On the twisty test route Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe gives chase in his long-term Audi TT RS, getting airborne at 90mph as he tries to prove the cheaper car is just as fast.

The TT-RS did pretty well in the japanese (5-2010) best motoring 5lap Tsukuba battle vs cars like the Nismo 370Z, Subaru WRX STI Spec (JDM version), under the same conditons(not perfect conditons) it was 1.3s quicker than the Nismo 370Z and on pair with the WRX STI Spec C. The TT-RS best laptime was as quick as e90 M3 and faster than R34 GT-R V spec, cars known for their bad track perfromance (ironic)

allright so the ttrs was able to keep up with the r8,but on the other hand the ttrs was pushing in all the corners and looked like a dump truck in comparison to the slot car like r8.I definately agree that cars like the r8 do not have 50,000-100,000 grand worth of more performance on the road. Then on the other hand some of the buyers of cars like that use them at the track where they can utilize all that performance and 5 to 10 seconds a lap faster starts to seem worth it.I am a firm believer that supercars are still the cream of the crop in road legal vehicles,on the road they might not be that much faster but that is not the point. The REAL selling point on cars like this is how they make you feel, and on the right road under the right conditions the thrills that you can get from a car like that is most definately worth 50,000 to 100,000 more! p.s.That is why hot hatches and sport sedans usually dont become the performance cars of the year at all the big car mags!

I don't think they said the Focus left the GTR in its wake, I think they just suggested that the Focus could keep up with Nissan on give or take roads. The question I think would be interesting (but perhaps embarrassing) to answer is just how slow does the chase car have to be before it can no longer keep up with with an R8 or a GTR? So for example if a TT RS can keep up with the R8, can one of the lesser TTs? Or maybe even an A3?
