New patrol car will be used by 54 constabularies in the UK

Vauxhall has revealed its latest five-door Astra police car.

The Vauxhall Astra police car has been developed by Vauxhall’s Special Vehicle Operations unit at Millbrook.

Changes over a standard Astra include a centre console converted to work with police radio header units, video capture facilities and mobile data terminals. All features are integrated into the Astra’s interior without the need for custom trim installations.

Vauxhall's manager of vehicle conversions, Dick Ellam, said, "With the new Astra, Vauxhall is offering the UK's police constabularies a vehicle which is not only superior dynamically to its predecessor but which also has the scope for much improved integration with the systems law enforcement demands.

“We are particularly proud that this integration allows the devices needed by the police service to be mounted within the standard architecture of the car's interior.”

Not sure whether the MoD police will. Other than that it makes complete sense to have a standardised car that is easy to upgrade/equip as needed for every force - economies of scale and all that. Plus no doubt they got a cracking deal from Vauxhall.

Can this be true? There are 39 forces in England, 4 in Wales, 1 in Northern Ireland, 8 in Scotland and then the MoD Police, Civil Nuclear Constabulary and British Transport Police and possibly ports and tunnels policing. If you ignore ports and tunnels this means that bar 1 organisation every force in the country will be using these, seems a bit difficult to believe????

Re: Vauxhall reveals Astra police car

When I was at Uni in the West Midlands in the 90s, there were still quite a few Pug 309s and Maestro police cars roaming around. It could be worse, Humberside were using Protons.
