Fiat is developing an entry-level hybrid drivetrain that could cut the CO2 emissions of its petrol-powered city cars to just 80g/km.
The Hybrid Powertrain concept matches the company’s upcoming dual-clutch transmission and the new 900cc TwinAir two-cylinder turbo petrol engine.
Fiat engineers have come up with the novel idea of integrating a small electric motor into the body of the gearbox. This motor, powered by a small battery pack, will turn the gearbox’s internal shafts and gears, and powers the car while the petrol engine is idle.
The system is likely to be offered as an option on the 500 and next-generation Panda; it could also find its way into future Puntos.
The most likely operational scenario is that the mini hybrid system will be used to power the car away from rest, and bolster low-end torque while the engine’s turbo is spooling up.

11 years ago the Honda Insight had CO2 emissions of 80g/km. Where is the progress?
