BMW’s radical Megacity electric four-seater, due to go on sale in 2013, could spawn many more variants, including an EV sports car, BMW sales and marketing boss Ian Robertson has admitted.
Speaking to Autocar, the British BMW board member said that the company’s Megacity won’t be restricted to "just one format" and the radical Vision ED sports car concept shown last year at the Frankfurt show, shows the possibility of a pure electric sports car, even if a final production version would be different.
Robertson also gave more details on BMW’s first mass produced electric car, including the fact that it will wear a BMW badge, rather than be sold under a separate brand.
"We’re in the final stages of picking a name," he said, "but we want it to become a strong sub-brand like we have with M."
Robertson also revealed that the company has aggressive weight targets for the Megacity, which will be built principally from carbonfibre. Using carbonfibre typically saves 30 per cent over an equivalent aluminium car, which in turn is typically 30 per cent lighter than a steel bodied car. He also promised that "it would still be a BMW to drive".
The Megacity is not predicted to be cheap, however. Cost of development and low sales targets will mean that it’s likely to have a premium price.
However, Robertson did admit that it would have high equipment levels, plus many extra features will be able to be added by dealers and possibly even buyers themselves.

This is interesting. I've just signed a three year BMW contract hire so I may upgrade to this car in 2013.

I still like the interior in the 1-series M Sport. Nice, tight and tidy without too much bling
