Spyker confirms talks with BMW over a future tie-up; announcement expected later this week

Saab’s parent company Spyker has confirmed that it is in talks with BMW over gaining access to BMW technology and parts following press speculation.

The deal is expected to be rubber stamped on Wednesday when the Spyker group will hold a press conference in Sweden.

A press release from Spyker has since noted “recent press speculation about the possible supply relationship with BMW”. It goes on to say that “the group confirms that talks are ongoing and will give further details once a final agreement has been reached".

A BMW spokesman responded to the speculation saying: "We are in talks with other manufacturers every now and then about a number of topics, on which we currently cannot provide any details. On Wednesday Saab is organising a conference in Sweden. We can only refer you to that conference."

In June, a Swedish newspaper reported that Saab was talking with BMW about the possibility of using the German manufacturer’s engines and transmissions for its new 9-2 supermini.

Flogging a dead horse

I don't get the hype that accompanies every mention of the SAAB name, given that the greatest advantage of the SAAB ownership experience was the resultant increased frequency of interface with one's service provider.

Re: Saab, BMW to announce tie-up

Scrub 9-2 for the supermini's name. How about a new '96' with a new BMW three-cylinder engine? A bit quicker, quieter and more economical than that DKW unit. (And that Cologne V4 come to that.)
