Removing kerbs from roads may be the best way to improve awareness and alertness among drivers, according to new research.
A study by researchers at Newcastle University found that 31 per cent of drivers become easily bored at the wheel and are therefore likely to take more risks such as speeding or aggressive overtaking manoeuvres in search of driving stimulation.
Researchers said that building more obstacles into the road system, such as taking away kerbs from the sides of roads, would improve concentration from motorists, as their cars would be open to more danger.
Lead Researcher Joan Harvey said: “Contrary to what you might expect when driving, hazards can actually increase our attention to the road so this may well be the way forward for planners.
“In towns we may need to start considering some radical schemes such as removing kerbs so there are more hazards - like pedestrians - around your car. Our research suggests that this might actually improve people's driving.”
