Buyer feedback to turbo 1.6 petrol coupe has been so strong that Honda will fast-track production

Honda is planning to fast-track production of its hot turbocharged CR-Z, sources in Japan have revealed.

Likely available in two guises – a 160bhp and 200bhp version – Autocar sources have said that buyer feedback has been so strong, and the drop-off in domestic sales so steep, that the firm is now fast-tracking the hot CR-Z’s development. It could even make a debut in production form as early as the Tokyo show next December.

Power will come courtesy of a turbocharged 1.6-litre unit, which will provide similar performance of a 2.0-litre engine, thanks to its forced induction and Honda’s patented VTEC-i fully variable camshaft timing system.

The CR-Z is currently only available with one engine - a hybrid that mates a 112bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 14bhp electric motor – which has left some potential buyers disappointed.
