Aston Martin has announced its latest collaborative project with Italian design house Zagato to mark the 50th anniversary year of the 1961 DB4GT Zagato.

The new car will make its debut appearance in concept form at the Villa D’Este Concours on May 21, followed by its first race appearance at the infamous Nürburgring towards the end of the month.

With initial customer interest gauged, both companies will then decide whether or not to make production versions of the car for 2012.

Aston Martin chief executive Dr Ulrich Bez said, “Now is the right time for a new Aston Martin Zagato, and in combining our design intelligence I think we can create something fitting of the iconic DB4GT Zagato that has gone before and since established itself as one of the most famous Aston Martins of all time.”The company’s first project with Zagato – the 1961 DB4GT Zagato – was a stripped-out version of the Brit- firm's car of which just 19 were made.

Most recently in 2003 both companies met again to produce 100 DB7 Zagatos, followed by 100 US-specific DB-AR1 (American Roadster 1), built as a pure two-seat, roofles roadster.
