Hot versions of the 1-series will be launched under 2-series badge to give own identity

The critical acclaim enjoyed by the just-introduced 1-series M Coupé, based on the current 1-series, has spurred BMW to create a follow-up model on the second-generation platform.

The new coupé will be launched with its own, stand-alone identity — the 2-series — which will further emphasise its independence from the new 1-series range.

A trademark filing in the US also reveals that the hot coupé is likely to wear M2 badges, suggesting that its performance engineering will be true to its M division heritage.

Power will come from a new twin-turbo 3.0-litre six currently under development at M division’s headquarters on the outskirts of Munich. The motor is likely to produce around 350bhp.

BMW is also planning a convertible variant of the M2.Read the full story on the new BMW 1-series
