Battery clamp fitting could lead to coolant leak and fire

Every Fisker Karma built is being recalled due to a fault with the car's battery connection.

The Karma, which went on sale in late 2011, is powered by twin 201bhp electric motors and a 260bhp petrol engine/generator. In total, 239 Karmas are being recalled.

The problem is linked to the fitting of the hose clamps to the 20kWh lithium ion battery pack.

Fisker says they “may have been positioned incorrectly during assembly" and that the problem could lead to a coolant leak that could, if it get sinside the battery, cause a fire.

Fisker has set a sales target of 12,500 Karma cars a year. Fisker plans to break into the mass market with its second car, codenamed Project Nina, which will go into production in late 2012.

Project Nina is being billed as a rival to the BMW 3-series, and will be powered by a BMW-sourced turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. The engine will be supplemented by Fisker's own range-extender hybrid technology.

Three body styles of Project Nina will be offered – saloon, convertible and shooting-brake – and it will cost from around $50,000 in the US. Unlike Fisker’s only current model, the Mercedes CLS-sized Karma, the new model will be offered in right-hand drive.
