Jaguar XJs will be built for the Indian market at Jaguar Land Rover's plant in Chakan, near Pune, it has been announced at the Delhi motor show. The move has been made in order for the car to be competitively priced against locally built rivals.
Both the BMW 7-series and Mercedes S-class are already manufactured in India, allowing the brands to offer more appealing prices than the previously import-only XJ.
The move, which will help Jaguar cut the cost of the car by avoiding shipping and increasing import charges, means the XJ will be the third JLR product built in India.
Jaguars and Land Rovers had previously been solely imported into India. However, as a result, JLR found itself unable to compete with the more aggressively-priced locally produced products. As a result, it built a new manufacturing facility in the Indian town of Chakan, in the Pune district.
In 2011 the plant began production of the Land Rover Freelander 2, followed by the Jaguar XF in 2013, following increased demand for both cars.
