Skoda has revealed a special edition Yeti as part of the VW Group's sponsorship of the 2014 Winter Olympics

A special edition Skoda Yeti has been revealed at the Moscow motor show to promote Volkswagen Group’s sponsorship of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Skoda Yeti Sochi is powered by a 1.8 TSI petrol engine with 150bhp. The turbocharged unit is mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox that sends drive to all four wheels.

Volkswagen hopes its sponsorship of the 2014 Olympics can help give fast-track its expansion plans in Russia, where it hopes to more than double sales to half a million units per year by 2018.

The Olympics should provide much-needed improvements to Russia’s road infrastructure and be a platform for promoting more fuel-efficient vehicles.

At the moment, VW has to downgrade its engines to meet older EU3 emissions legislation and is lobbying the government to bring Russian fuel and emissions standards in line with the rest of Europe.

A new special edition?

Yeti Sochi. This is surely a version of the Yeti Urban that we get in the UK, but for the Russian market perhaps?

VW v Russian Oil Giants

No contest. The giants will win. The cost of a new cracking plant, which is needed, is off the wall, and Putin is considering using his head Smile

With fuel at 0.60p a litre (petrol) the Russians wont take kindly to any more increases. This year has seen for the first time a world market/local market balance coming into effect, so they had many increases, and then some small decreases.

My visits to Russia are very frequent, and whilst roads and drivers leave much to be desired, they are making some progress. Worst though is the massive increase of car ownership, little of which is from the famous Togliatti Fiat/Lada plant. Renault I believe has taken over and counting the number of Dusters I saw last month, they might even be making them there? I avoid Moscow like the plague - staying in St.Petersburg and using the fast (3hrs) train city center to city center makes more sense than trying to get killed in the rush hour!
