Ginetta's plans to put its G50 EV into production have been put on hold after the British firm failed to secure the required funding to develop it.
Ginetta had requested £1.7million in government funding, but was rejected as the car was considered "too niche", company chairman Lawrence Tomlinson told Autocar.
"This is a real pet project of mine," he said. "We have the running prototype and all the components sorted, but it will cost us too much to develop ourselves.
"We could easily turn this into a usable everyday vehicle, not just a sports car prototype. We can extend the range to 250 miles - I drive it and charge it up using my windmill, so I don't see how the car could be any greener."
Tomlinson has not given up hope on the car making production in the future, but says he won't chase the government into giving Ginetta funding.
"We're as busy as we've ever been," he said. "Order books are full on all our models for the next three months, so I'm not going to divert resources away from our core business unecessarily."
Tomlinson also revealed that Ginetta has developed a petrol-electric hybird LMP1 race car with Zytek Engineering, but this project has also been put on hold due to funding issues.
