Range Rover Evoque updated for 2014; new nine-speed gearbox boosts fuel economy

The Range Rover Evoque has been shown at the Frankfurt motor show, and gets a number of changes in 2014, including the adoption of a new nine-speed automatic gearbox.

First seen in a prototype at the Geneva motor show earlier this year, the ZF-supplied nine-speed gearbox is now a production reality and will be fitted to the  Land Rover-made Evoque’s one petrol and two diesel engines as standard.

Land Rover claims fuel economy is improved by up to 11.4 per cent and CO2 emissions by up to 9.5 per cent in some models, with the most frugal front-wheel-drive, 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel version now coming with figures of 57.6mpg (combined) and 129g/km.

Another new feature for the 2014 Evoque is an optional Active Driveline ‘on demand’ four-wheel drive system. In steady driving conditions above 22mph, all-wheel-drive Evoques switch to front-drive mode to improve fuel economy. The system automatically returns to four-wheel drive in 300 milliseconds should conditions demand it.

Active Driveline also includes an Active Torque Biasing feature that has an electronic differential (called e-Diff) to split torque between the rear wheels, improving traction and stability.

Torque Vectoring by Braking is another new feature for the four-wheel drive system and it’s standard, rather than part of the optional Active Driveline. This feature boosts agility and safety by splitting torque between all four wheels to counter understeer.

Other new features for the revised Evoque include various parking assist, lane departure and traffic sign recognition systems, and a wade sensor. 

There are minor detail changes to the exterior, such as new badges and new alloy wheel options, and extra colour choices inside. 

Sales of the 2014 Evoque will begin later this year.

Press release

I discovered the press release that was the spark for the original item on here - and that had as little information in as the article here (ie, no figures for the autos with the only CO2 being the fwd manual model that has been available since launch and therefore does not represent any kind of "news" at all). And to present a three weeks old article as being "news" from the show is utter cobblers

The only thing that would actually help people would be a test of the new 9-speed auto back to back against the old auto to see what the mpg improvement actually is, not what the EU test says

It's exactly what the evoque needs

As an evoque owner, this is exactly what it needs. Whilst many hate the styling, I still think it is a revolutionary design although it is becoming a bit too blasé and having Victoria beckham market it hasn't helped the image.

It ride and handles unlike any SUV and is actually very good off road.  However, what really lets the evoque down are its emissions and economy. I barely get above 27mpg and I have the SD4 diesel auto! That is woeful and I really think the auto box has a lot to do with it as it often hangs onto to low a gear. I would accept this economy if the car had the 3 litre 6 cylinder but less than 30 mpg from a 2.2 4 cylinder, come on!
