  • 1968 Triumph GT6 MkI

How hard is it to find nice examples in the UK? I used to drive my uncles around years ago and I am thinking of picking one up. Yes, I am a glutton for punishment.

There are 2 on auto traders website, 1 at £4.5k,1 at £6k, both look very nice, they are a very handsome car but i could think of 349 better ways to get rid of £5k which would be less painful. My stepdad bought a spitfire 4 years ago, paid £4k for it, it was mint but they don't stay mint without lots of time and dough invested in them. He's still got it but its on jacks once a month, he doesn't mind cos he's got  the time, money and patience to mess about with it, i don't mind cos he gave me his mint '76 bonneville cos he didn't have time for it.Get one if you have a garage and its gonna be a weekend car and you havethe money or skill to keep it nice.

You should try the MK2 as it had the independent rear suspension.I had one in the mid 70's and became addicted to straight six engines. Check the overdrive doesn't cut in and out. This is caused by the insulation on the cable to the solenoid wearing as it's routed through the gearstick and transmission tunnel and will wear. Also try the Truimph owners club.I've seen a few at Classic Car shows for about 4-5k.

    Good luck.

It's all about personal preference but the Spitfire I drove, a MK1, was truly awful. It wasn't a wreck either.

There are more robust cars out there, an MGC?

There is - or certainly was - a really good Triumph Owners Club called the Triumph Sports Six Club, which I suspect is where most of the good cars reside. I believe the GT6 was known as the "poor man's E Type" which I suppose is some kind of backhanded compliment and, yes, make sure you get a later car with IRS.
