Brighton to London run to showcase new green technology

The Royal Automobile Club’s inaugural Brighton to London Future Car Challenge, a showcase for green cars, light commercial vehicles and motorcycles, will run on Saturday 6 November.

The event will feature the latest electric, hybrid and low-emission vehicles on the 60-mile route from Brighton to London.

It follows the traditional course of the world-famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in reverse, starting from Madeira Drive in Brighton and finishing in London’s Regent Street on Saturday afternoon.

The street will be closed to regular traffic and the cars will join the traditional International Concours display of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which then takes place on Sunday 7 November.

The Brighton to London Future Car Challenge is not a race, but there is an optional challenge to use the least energy within a given time.

It’s open to road-legal concept, development, pre-production and production vehicles that feature and promote new or alternative energies. The closing date for entry is 30 September.

There are seven entrants confirmed so far: a 2011 Tata Indica Vista, a 2010 Tesla Roadster Sport, two Toyota Prius hybrids, a Murray T25, a Delta E-4 Coupé and a Mitsubishi IMiEV from the Energy Savings Trust.

Ford, Mercedes Benz, Smart and Vauxhall are expected to confirm their involvement soon.

Mr Cussons, Chairman of The Royal Automobile Club Motoring Committee, said, “I’m confident that this new event will become a feature of the motoring calendar here in the UK in much the same way the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run has.”
