Mercedes-Benz would take the lead in developing and engineering any new car shared with Infiniti and based on Mercedes' new MFA platform, according to Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche.
Infiniti will base its new British-built cross-over hatch, based on the Q30 concept shown at Frankfurt last year, on the front-drive MFA architecture that also underpins the new A-class, B-class and CLA.
"We would take the lead on developing any compact car. It is our platform," said Zetsche.
Infiniti boss Andy Palmer also suggested in an interview at Frankfurt that further Infiniti models might be based on the MFA, understood to refer to a soft-roader based on the jacked-up GLA version of the A-class.
However, Zetsche cautioned that the wide-ranging cooperation deal with Renault-Nissan and Infiniti had its practical limits.
"Too many projects could be a worry for management," he said.
