Mercedes is not the only company working on a new version of the 300SL Gullwing.
This is the Panamericana concept, a fibreglass-bodied recreation featuring a modern 5.5-litre Mercedes V8, producing around 370bhp.

Underneath is a powder-coated steel chassis, and the Panamericana rides on old-school 17in AMG alloys.
Inside there is a four-spoke leather steering wheel with power steering, plus air conditioning, a four-point harness, CD player and iPod adapter, and fitted leather luggage.
The car is the brainchild of engineer Arturo Alonso of Gullwing-America, who has raced the Carrera Panamericana in a Mercedes 300SE.
There are also plans to fit the car with a V6 motor and it will be offered with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-ratio Speedtronic automatic transmissions.
