Volkswagen's XL1 will be powering up the Goodwood hill in July

Volkswagen’s super-frugal XL1 will be taking to the hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month.

The XL1, which claims 313mpg and CO2 emissions of 21g/km will be piloted around the course by F1 legend and six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx. At just 1282mm high the XL1 is lower than a Porsche Boxster.

Also making its way up the famous hill will be Volksagen’s Polo WRC car, piloted by outgoing VW board member Ulrich Hackenberg. The Polo WRC is currently being used by WRC championship leader Sébastien Ogier.

Alongside its two headliners VW will also be showing off the new Golf GTI and GTD to potential customers.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place between 10-14 July. Stay tuned to Autocar.co.uk for all the latest from the event.
