BMW is to recall 45,000 BMW X3 and BMW X4 SUVs in the UK after it was found that anchor bars for child safety seats could fail.
The lower anchor bars secure child safety seats to the car’s chassis, but issues have been found with a part that has been fitted to a total of 622,00 vehicles worldwide, with European-based cars being the most affected.
BMW says the cause of the problem is due to the fact that European-spec Isofix fittings use rigid connectors to fix child seats in place. The majority of non-European child seats use flexible latch connectors, which reduce the likelihood of the part breaking.
Affected cars include X3s made from 2011 and X4s manufactured from 2015. The problem was first identified by a customer in Europe in March this year, but so far there have been no reports of related injuries.
BMW's fix for the internally manufactured part involves welding a bracket to the lower anchor bars and the vehicle body. BMW dealers are already contacting affected customers with a view to making the minor modification to each vehicle.
BMW’s recall follows the Volkswagen Group’s major recall of more than 800,000 Volkswagen Touaregs and Porsche Cayennes earlier this year.
