270bhp Peugeot 308 R revealed alongside the standard Peugeot 308 hatchback in Frankfurt

The Peugeot 308 R, a dramatic re-imagining of the new Peugeot 308, has been revealed at the Frankfurt motor show.

The 308 R Concept R is powered by the same high-performance 1.6-litre four-cylinder, 270bhp engine that was recently seen in the RCZ R. The extreme re-styling uses carbon-fibre panels that are bolted directly the car’s understructure.

New panels are used for the doors, front wings, bodysides, sills, bonnet and bumpers, with only the roof panel and the tailgate remaining from the production 308. The 308 R sits 26mm lower than the standard car and the front track has been widened by a significant 30mm.

The extended matte black sills flow into the extended wheel arches, which host bespoke 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/35 tyres. Braking is provided by four-piston calipers and Alcon discs, which are 380mm in diameter and 32mm thick at the front and 330mm and 22mm thick at the rear.

Thomas Rohm, new Peugeot 308 and 308 R concept design manager said, “For us, it was clear that the 308 R Concept retained the identifiable features of the new Peugeot 308. They share elegance and sophistication. The 308 R Concept is a production car pushed to the extreme.”

The 1.6-litre THP engine, which develops 170bhp per litre and a significant 243lb ft of torque, spreads power from just 1900rpm to as high as 5500rpm. The engine drives the front wheels through a six-speed manual ‘box and a Torsen differential. Despite the very high specific output, Peugeot says the engine has an official Co2 figure of just 145g/km.

I guess Peugeot has become

I guess Peugeot has become the premium arm of PSA now, as its dull paint finish is being called matte, rather than matt.

276bhp from the 1.6L engine

This is obviously the same engine Renault uses in the Clio RS which means they can offer the same tune in that car. That would be interesting.

However more important is a proper manual gearbox. Dual clutch should've been offered as an option not as standard. We're not Americans and nor are these supercars.

No its got nothing to do with Renault, this is a PSA/BMW engine, as used in numerous  Citroens, Peugeots and the current Mini in various states of tune.

i would very much doubt that. Their is no tie up between Renault and Peugeot. The engine would be the usual PSA/BMW Unit.

Sorry, Guys

My mistake.

There is no connection between Renault Clio Rs and Peugeot 308 R, whatsoever.

Good luck, Peugeot with this new 308 R.

Power output puts it squarely against the Astra VXR and Ford Focus Mountune.

hopeless

They are toying with silly concepts while Honda is testing the coming Civic Type R in the Ring day and night....
