Revised Forester gets sleeker, less utilitarian exterior styling and a new range of engines for its US unveiling

A new Subaru Forester has been unveiled at the Los Angeles motor show, and will reach the UK next summer.

Slightly bigger than today’s car, the styling of the fourth-generation Forester is sportier with a more sloped-back screen and a less utilitarian feel.

The current Subaru Forester is a key element of Subaru’s UK line-up, and the new version will get different engines to the US cars when it reaches these shores. UK buyers will be able to choose from 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel and petrol 'boxer' units, as well as a new 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged petrol engine, producing 276bhp.

Both of the naturally-aspirated engines will feature a six-speed manual transmission as standard, while Subaru’s Lineartronic (CVT) transmission is available on both petrol engines. The Lineartronic transmission has been modified to manage the increased power while also providing improved fuel efficiency, and ensures that both CVT-equipped petrol engines achieve the 2015 Japanese fuel economy standard.

The US powerplant line-up will comprise a 170bhp 2.5-litre base engine and a punchier 2.0-litre turbo boasting 250bhp. The 2.5-litre pumps 174lb ft and the 2.0 Turbo a heftier 258lb ft. Both are launched with standard all-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmissions with the option of a ‘Lineartronic’ CVT. US-spec models will feature standard 17inch wheels on the 2.5; 18inch on the Turbo.
