The high-spec, luxurious Peugeot 208 XY is part of Peugeot's strategy to move its brand upmarket

Peugeot has unveiled the production version of the Peugeot 208 XY at the Paris motor show, a style-led variant that’s part of the manufacturer's ambition to move its brand upmarket.

First seen in concept form at Geneva, the 208 XY gets a range of exterior and interior embellishments. The mirror casings, fog lamp trims, window trims and rear skirt bead are chrome, with gloss-black finishing on the quarter panel and centre pillar. The car rides on 17in multi-spoke alloys and bears 'XY' badging on the rear. Roof decals are an option.

The cabin gets an aluminium pedal bracket and footrest and bespoke trim on the vents, dashboard, steering wheel insert and front and rear door crossbars. A chrome embellishment covers the door trims, vents and side decorations of the multimedia touchscreen. The dashboard itself is finished in a metallic bronze colour. The 208 XY's seats are trimmed in cloth and Alcantara.

The 208 XY will be available with a choice of two diesel and two petrol engine options, with the most efficient 1.6-litre oilburner emitting 98g/km of CO2.

UK pricing and availability will be revealed at a later date.

Ring Ring....

....  "Hello, it's the 80's here.  We would like out graphics back."

If I understand this correctly, Peugeot want to market the XY as a cool, youthful, almost sub brand in the same ways as Citroen do with DS.

Sorry, it is a trim level and I can't see the market seeing it as anything but.  That said it is a nice trim level and not one without a level of desirability - just not enough to do what Peugeot want.

For some reason though, it puts me in mind of Fords Ghia cars of old (I'm talking circa 1980's - oh there it is again!).

Peugeot 208 XY

Stupid, ridiculous name. Might just as well have called it CAQ40.
