Design boss Gorden Wagener promised a ‘surprise’ for the summer; it's expected to preview a future Rolls-Royce Dawn rival

Mercedes has previewed a model expected to be a convertible Vision Maybach 6 concept in a new video, before the car is revealed at this month’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The drop-top version of last year’s Maybach 6 concept, a 738bhp four-wheel-drive 2+2 electric car with gullwing doors, continues Mercedes’ vision for a product to rival the Rolls-Royce Wraith and its convertible sister, the Rolls-Royce Dawn.

Insiders have suggested production versions of the Maybach 6 models could be assembled by a new bespoke coachbuilding operation to provide customers of its higher-end models with greater freedom in customising their cars.

Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener hinted at the convertible concept’s arrival last week, writing on an Instagram post that something 'surprising' is due this summer, while showing sketches of the Maybach 6 concept and also the IAA Concept from 2015.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance takes place from the 17 August. BMW will also reveal the Z4 Concept at the event, which previews its own future drop-top model that has been co-developed with the upcoming Toyota Supra.

Nice music! Mercedes really

Nice music! Mercedes really need to consider whether they need to compete in EVERY sector though, competing against RR at the same time as sticking their badge on a small Renault van or a Nissan pickup

They should have bought Rolls

They should have bought Rolls Royce when they had the chance.

well I am sure they have

well I am sure they have Aston Martin in their sights in the next few years after the new Vantage and Vanquish have rolled out ?

This concept would make a fanstastic Lagonda coupe with a few small changes...
