Instead of the previous version’s 402bhp petrol engine, however, the Audi A3 e-tron uses a 211bhp 1.4-litre TFSI engine, mated to a 27bhp electric motor.

According to Audi, the concept will hit 60mph in 6.8sec, have a top speed of 144mph and an electric-only range of 34 miles.

The all-new production version of the Audi A3 is expected to launch in the second half of 2012, in both saloon and hatchback guises.
