BMW's fastest-ever drop-top

This is the new BMW M6 Convertible, which makes its debut at the British motor show next month, and goes on sale in September.

The drop-top M6 is the fastest convertible BMW ever, thanks to the same 500bhp 5.0-litre V10 engine found in the Coupé.Select the fiercest shift programme on the standard seven-speed SMG gearbox, and the M6 soft-top rockets from 0-62mph in 4.8sec – just 0.2sec slower than the hard-top – and then on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

With the same drivetrain as the coupé – including BMW’s Variable M Differential – expect the cabrio to be almost as good to drive, while inside it should be almost as silent, thanks to a well-insulated tripe-layer roof.

As with the coupé, the cabrio uses plenty of aluminium, along with plastic in the front wings and carbonfibre in the bumpers to keep weight down. This also means that the M6 Convertible retains 50:50 weight distribution.

Prices have yet to be announced, but standard 6-series soft-tops are around £5000 more expensive than their tin-top cousins, so expect a similar premium for the M6.
