Increase doesn’t affect Sandero’s reign as cheapest new car on sale in Britain

Dacia has raised the starting price of its entry-level Dacia Sandero by £1000, meaning it now costs from £6995.

The bump edges the price of Britain’s cheapest car to within £1004 of the list price for the Suzuki Celerio, which is the second-cheapest new car you can buy in the UK (it’s currently being offered with a £500 discount to close the gap further).

A Dacia spokesman told Autocar that the Sandero price increase, which is the first for the model since it was introduced in Britain five years ago, is intended to “simplify” the price listings for the range. It comes around five months after the model was facelifted.

The price gap between the Access and higher ranking Ambience, which gets extras such as DAB radio, air conditioning and electric front windows, had grown to £1400 since 2013, but the new pricing sees the gap shrink to £800.

The Sandero Lauréate, the top model, gets a price hike of £400 to bring it up to £8995 – although that still places the model, which comes with extras such as 15in alloys, touchscreen infotainment with sat-nav and parking sensors, among the very cheapest cars on sale in Britain.

The entry-level Sandero Access accounts for just 3% of UK sales, with British buyers favouring the higher-specced Ambience, particularly with the SCe 75 engine, a 74bhp version of the car’s three-pot.

The Ambience holds onto the title of Britain’s cheapest car with standard-fit air conditioning.
