XV will lead renewed sales push along with the Forester; brand focusing on customers with active lifestyles

Subaru is targeting an ambitious threefold increase in UK sales by 2025 as part of a comeback plan to return the brand to health and match its record sales year of 2001.

A new UK MD, Chris Graham (formerly boss of Citroën Ireland), has been appointed by the importer IM Group, whose development director, Torbjörn Lillrud, is driving the push into the next decade.

“Now we are extremely ambitious for the UK,” said Lillrud at the 2019 Geneva motor show, “but in the past, we’ve done a bad job. We didn’t have a plan. We focused too much on the WRC rallying and missed the boom in SUV sales. We forgot to tell the right story”.

Last year, Subaru started seeing signs of recovery, increasing sales by 17% to 3141 from 2679, but that was still just one-third of its record 11,000 sales in 2001.

“We are now targeting real customers. Those that want to drive from London to Scotland and have active lifestyles. We want the dog walkers and the climbers and the outdoors enthusiasts. They are natural Subaru buyers,” said Lillrud.

This year, Subaru will target 4000 sales built around its best-sellers, the Subaru XV and Forester. The XV receives a facelift for 2019 and the Forester is due a new petrol hybrid powertrain, called e-Boxer, towards the end of the year. The engine is expected to boost UK sales to around 5000 in 2020.

Horrid CVT

I hope Subaru sees sense and drops that horrid CVT, an otherwise excellent product spoiled by a poor choice of gearbox.
Please fit it with a full auto unit or offer a choice of manual.

Dinosaur Importer

Going to be a tough battle for Subaru with an importer that doesn't bring the whole range to the UK (Australia sells the Levorg 2.0 GT, for example), an off-beat manufacturer who no longer has a halo model and tends to stick with unattractive designs rather than bringing the great looking concept designs (WRX Concept for example) to market - Toyota did this with the CHR, and refuse to use their while engine range across the board.
The XV sells loads in the US, 9000+ in March alone. They'd sell more if they put in the blown FB16, FA20 and maybe sell an FA24 based XV STi like the Forester of old. I'd prefer that to the lifestyle SUVs like the Evoque.

Lot of people being critical

Lot of people being critical of Subaru cars. Perhaps look at their USA sales figures. There they sell more cars than BMW and Audi, combined.

Here in the UK we seem to think we are the world.

They also don't have IM as their importer.

Gas is also significantly cheaper.

Autos are a big thing in the US.

Apples and oranges.

In truth though, you are correct. We are a backwater that doesn't generate enough sales to make them interested in producing for our market.
