Currently reading: Peugeot 308 GTi long-term test review - road trip to Anglesey

After throwing the likes of the Porsche 911 R and Ferrari 488 GTB around Anglesey, how can the 308 GTi compete?

My time with the Peugeot 308 GTi is coming to an end, so I thought it prudent to take it for one last proper hoo-ha – a trip to Anglesey in Wales, for Autocar’s Handling Day.

It was an effortless journey on motorway and windy Welsh roads. The 308 has the power to keep up and beyond on fast roads and the grip and handling to hold its own around bends. It’s very comfortable, too, although my gripes about the infotainment system remain. I’ve given up on DAB radio, with the intermittent cutting out of my favourite songs too much to bear. I am, however, finally getting on with Bluetooth, although one phone call recipient said I sounded “like I was at the bottom of the ocean”.

The return journey felt a bit more tame – unsurprising, given that I’d been throwing cars such as the Porsche 911 R and Ferrari 488 GTB on the track. The Peugeot inevitably feels dull compared with those, but even so, the return to my trusty GTi for the drive home was welcome.

Sensor issues

A problem occurred recently with one of the 308 GTi’s front parking sensors. It became stuck on for a minute or so, even when driving forward with no obstructions ahead whatsoever. A ‘parking sensor failure’ warning light flashed up on the dashboard, too. It hasn’t played up since, but it’s something we’re keeping a close eye on.

Yawn....

Not the car but the piece, no words about the performance or handling? The author could be writing about a supermarket trolley.

Stuck record

Sorry to repeat what I've said before , I don't have anything against French cars but only this engine . This is the same engine that I had in a Cooper S which had dreadful design flaws , just look at some online forums, my 3 year old S with 30k miles cost approx £4k to fix . It appears the major difference between this new version and my old S is that they've extracted another 70bhp...and don't ever believe a highly strung turbo can go 18k miles between oil changes.Apart from all that it's a very dull looking and slightly awkward looking car , 309gti anyone?

I'm sure they must have upgraded some of the components too, eg. conrods, cylinders, valve springs etc. Seemingly similar engines can be more different than one expects. I'm not denying what you've said at all though, just that continuing development should hopefully have solved earlier issues.

On a separate note, to my eyes this looks a lot better than any modern mini.

You are being way too kind because they give you those wheels. Far too polite. Lets face it - this like all other French made cars is really a rip off load of outdated dull rubbish with things that fall off and play up or annoy. Time the sold to the Chinese..wont be long now

Autocar sister magazine AutoExpress - 2016 Driver Power Survey best cars to own, #2 - Renault #3 - Renault #4 - Lexus #5 - Lexus #6 - Lexus etc.

So bar Tesla which was the overall winner, your awful French cars managed to beat Lexus and every other manufacturer?

Please tell us which car you drive and the car you would advice everyone of us idiots should buy, I'll tell you how far down the list behind that French crap it comes.

Load of rubbish

I looked a few of the 308 GTI'S rivals - VW group was ruled out because of the ongoing scandal. The focus was brilliant to drive but that dash - why so many buttons it was my idea of hell!?! Neither the Megane nor Astra had been updated so were the awful old models so were again ruled out. So I went to peugeot to see the 308 - the dash is glorious, it sounds brilliant, has tons of character and brings a smile to my face on every journey. Just because you don't appreciate it doesn't make it awful. Just like me with the Ford Focus - no denying it's a great car but not my cup of tea!
