This summer's Silverstone Classic to host 911 Porsche 911s in a record-breaking cavalcade

The 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 will be commemorated by a parade of - appropriately - 911 of the rear-engined sports cars.

Set to take place at the upcoming Silverstone Classic, the special anniversary parade to mark 50 years of the Porsche was inundated with responses. So far, more than 1000 Porsche 911 owners have responded, making the event a complete sell out.

"Originally we feared achieving 911 Porsche 911s might have been a somewhat over ambitious and idealistic target – but with Porsche Club Great Britain’s invaluable input, we’ve sailed past that goal with eight weeks to spare,” reported Nick Wigley, the event director.

The parade is set to feature many famous competition and showroom models, including the Carrera, Targa, RS, RSR, Speedster, GT and Turbo variants.

Nick Hine, chairman of Porsche Club GB, confirmed “There are a number of very special 911s and Porsche personalities appearing.

“We will be making further announcements in the coming weeks but are delighted to reveal that two Porsche racing legends – Derek Bell MBE and David Piper – will be among those helping us to celebrate this important occasion on the full grand prix track at Silverstone."

The event will eclipse the previous birthday parade hosted at Silverstone, where 767 Jaguar E-types took to the track in 2011 to celebrate the car's 50th anniversary.

Porsche Cars GB has also prepared its own 1965 'short-wheelbase' 911 race car to compete in the races hosted at the Silverstone Classic, as part of its anniversary celebrations.

Originally unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in 1963, the Porsche 911 has achieved global sales to date totalling more than 820,000.
