The Alpine A110 is a different kind of sports car - lighter, more agile, and less powerful than its conventional sports car rivals.

This new 2020 Alpine A110S version, though, is closer than the lesser, standard, A110. With 288bhp it can do 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 162mph.

Which makes it closer to the benchmark car in the mid-engined, two-seat sports car class: the Porsche 718 Cayman.

This, then, is the 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman T, the Alpine A110S's closest rival. It has a 2.0-litre flat four turbocharged engine making 296bhp, can go from 0-62mph in 5.1sec and has a top speed of 171mph.

But which is the better sports car? Join our testers as we try them back-to-back to pick a winner. If we can.

Porsche needs a 6

I agree with the verdict. A sports car needs an engine that is fun to use. However good the Porsche is, that 4 cylinder is a big let down. A sonorous 6 is really needed in a Porsche or at least an engine with character. Alpine 4 pot sounds nice. I like the softer dartier approach they take and the lightness. More fun at legal speeds. Agree the base model is best for most and the S for track use. Cayman really needs the 6 but ideally with shorter gearing than the GTS so you can enjoy the revs

Matt Prior makes more sense

There was too much gushing for the Cayman here so the Journo lost his credibility.

Whatever Boris says on the other, is as valid for him as it is not for anyone else. It comes down to personal preference.

I would be inclined to go for something more playful and light on its toes, just like the Alpine 110 and I prefer the sound of the Alpine's engine.
