Mid-year sales record for Chinese brand as EV line-up outperforms the industry average

MG sales have rocketed by 76.3% year-on-year, and the Chinese brand shifted 519 more cars in the first six months of 2021 than it did in the whole of 2019.

MG claims that it surpassed a 1.5% UK market share in five of those months and that 31.4% of all the cars it has sold have fully electric powertrains. The average among other car makers' is 8.1%, making MG the fourth-biggest EV brand in the country, it says.

It launched the MG ZS EV - a small family SUV - in 2019 and followed it with the electric MG 5 SW EV family estate last year. It also introduced its first plug-in hybrid powertrain in the MG HS SUV last year.

In addition to its new electrified models, MG says more than 30 new dealers have joined its network in the past 12 months, boosting the total in the UK to 137.

“Mid-year is the perfect time to reflect on our achievements so far in 2021, a year which has seen us constantly outperform the market in what have been some really tough trading conditions,” said Guy Pigounakis, MG’s commercial director.

“As we focus on achieving yet another record year through the second half of 2021, we take huge pride in the fact we have a very focused and engaged dealer network, great product, some class-leading EVs, a strong model range and some incredible results to shout about, not least as one of the nation’s best-loved and best-selling electric car brands.”

The upturn in performance for MG comes amid an industry-wide recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused registrations to tumble by 29.4% in 2020.

Figures from the SMMT revealed that registrations had bounced back by 674% in May and 28% in June this year, despite car manufacturers around the world being hampered by a global shortage of semiconductor computer chips.

MG is not a Chinese brand, but a British automotive marque now owned by state-owned Chinese company SAIC Motor Corporation Limited.

You would not call Mini a German brand would you?

SAIC have done incredibly reinventing the MG brand - given nobody in the UK is going to hanker after a real Chinese brand.

I have always been willing to give a left field choice a fair consideration. So after testing, we recently bought a brand new MG ZS 1.0 Auto. Its just the right size, good size flat boot, 3cyl engine (from a GM design) is perky and refined, very quiet. Dual clutch gearbox changes very smoothly. Handling is responsive and ride smooth, but it can let through sharper bumps in the road. Interior is smart, far better than the Arona also considered. Comfy leather seats, heated, 360 degree cameras, automatic handbrake, blindspot and cross traffic alerts, plus much more spec. Look resplendent in its tri-layer paint.
We don't usually buy new for personal vehicles, but for £19K with discounts no point buying used!! its an astonishingly lot of car, even better it does everything very well it doesn't feel like any real compromise either.

MG do seem to be on a roll at the moment - also going great guns with market share in Australia and also India (including larger SUV's we don't see over here like the Hector and Gloster).
