The final full-scale motor show of 2022 hosts important debuts from Porsche, Toyota, Genesis and more

There were times at the Los Angeles motor show where it felt like the good old days of shows.

Such as trying to get up close and take a clean picture of the new Porsche 911 Dakar, by far the biggest draw of the show in the LA Convention Centre in the revitalised downtown area of the city.

It was very busy at Porsche all day, as people admired the most unlikely of 911s. We thought the famous old sports car had been sliced and diced every way possible into every niche possible but no, here was another. An unlikely 911 but a very welcome one. Kudos, Porsche.

The last rites for the motor show were seemingly read recently after the Paris motor show, but here we are just weeks later at LA looking at static cars in show halls. Following the recent trend of shows, it was undoubtedly quieter than in years gone by, yet the new metal count was greater than in Paris even if most of the industry’s biggest executives stayed away.

Most, but not all: Volkswagen’s Thomas Schäfer was in town. When asked for his view on the future of the motor show, he agreed with the general sentiment that the world is moving on from them, a change hastened by Covid.

“Obviously, it's not happening the way it used to happen, motor shows one after another, every city having one. Some of the central ones might still carry on. But it's all moving more like in Munich [an outdoor show in the city centre] and I like that a little bit more.

“I like the [Goodwood] Hillclimb, and stuff like this. It's interesting. Now, CES in Las Vegas is getting a lot of attention. The places to be and the format have changed. I don't think we will go back to the way it used to be, to be honest."

We best enjoy them while they last, then. Beyond the 911, the next biggest reveal came from Genesis and its X Convertible concept. Genesis is at the stage of its development where it constantly needs to be creating news and headlines to build interest, and this concept certainly does that. It’s nicely proportioned and, while clearly fanciful for production, showcases a brand fast growing in confidence and ability to make an impact.

Making an impact is something the Hummer EV did. Frankly, it’s an absurd creation, and a brand that was probably best left dormant. Far greater intrigue could be found in the Hyperion X1, a hydrogen supercar that looks the type of concept/prototype to be unlikely to ever a turn a wheel in anger, yet we wish them well as its design is a world away from the homogenised shape of zero-emission supercars we’re seeing more often.

We’ve already turned the wheel of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and been impressed with it, but LA actually marked its motor show debut. It should do well for Hyundai. As will the new Toyota Prius for its maker, a car so radically transformed in this new generation into a truly desirable model that it feels inexplicable that UK buyers will be denied it. Maybe so few were sold before because it wasn’t the most desirable model, however impressive and efficient the tech?

More mystery was found on the Toyota stand with the Toyota bZ Compact SUV concept that not even the Toyota folk working on the stand knew anything about. (It’s a CH-R-sized EV.)

The US Big Three of General Motors, Chrysler (well, Stellantis) and Ford had nothing new at the show, although the Ford’s 1967 Mustang was the donor car for an exquisite electric restomod, the Charge Cars 67, yours for £350,000.

Other notable debuts included a pair of new SUVs from Vietnamese maker Vinfast, the generic VF8 and the ungainly VF9, the Lexus RX, which looked exactly as you thought it would, and a new Subaru Impreza, a car that’s glory days are so far behind it that any pining for it to return to the UK has long since been extinguished.

A show that was a long way from a classic, then, but one still not short of headlines.

Inspired by the 1967 Ford Mustang, the Charge Cars 67 is a £350,000 electromod with a power output of 536bhp. The entire car has been redesigned, re-engineered and luxurified for the electrified era, with four electric motors powered by a 63kWh battery. That’s good enough for a range of 200 miles, an eye-watering 1121lb ft of torque and a 0-62mph sprint of 3.9 sec. Not to mention a top speed of 155mph…

It's the latest representation of the firm's 'Athletic Elegance' design language, with a long bonnet, short overhangs and a unique, quad-LED light arrangement both at the front and rear. Is it the best-looking car at the Los Angeles motor show?

The absolutely huge Hummer EV certainly has the power to match its sheer size and is popular with the crowds in the US, which, of course, is the Hummer’s homeland. With 819bhp on tap, the EV produces 11,500lb ft and a 0-62mph time of just 3.5sec. Its battery pack provides more than 300 miles of range.

The Hyperion XP1 was first revealed in 2020, but a prototype has appeared in LA for the model's world debut. The hydrogen-electric supercar is claimed to produce more than 2000bhp from four electric motors, with around 1000 miles of range on a single charge. Top speed is said to stand at 221mph and 0-62mph takes a claimed 2.2sec.

The LA motor show is also hosting the US debut of the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The saloon uses of the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and is equipped with a battery of up to 77kWh for a range of 379 miles. It’s not short on power, either, with up to 329bhp from a twin-motor four-wheel-drive powertrain. Watch out, Tesla Model 3…

The off-road-focused Porsche 911 Dakar lands in LA. The rugged, all-terrain sports car pays tribute to the firm’s 1984 Paris-Dakar rally victory. It's most closely related to the four-wheel-drive Porsche 911 GTS, sharing its 473bhp, 420lb ft 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six. It also gains several off-road modifications to the chassis and body, making it a completely different beast from its standard sibling. Just 2500 examples of the Dakar will be built, priced at £173,000.

Subaru Impreza

This is a big one for the North American market: the sixth-generation Subaru Impreza. It's been a long time since the Japanese Ford Focus rival bowed out of the UK market, but it's still a popular proposition on the other side of the Atlantic, and this latest car aims to improve the formula with a purposeful new look, stiffer chassis set-up and a top-rung RS model with a 182bhp 2.5-litre boxer engine.

Toyota Prius

Radically overhauled inside and out, much more powerful and now PHEV-only, the new Toyota Prius marks quite the reinvention for the pioneering hybrid. But the biggest news for us Brits is that it won't be sold here, with the more popular Toyota Corolla Touring Sports taking its place in the line-up.

A little off topic I know, but the article is about LA, so here's wishing Jay Leno a speedy recovery. There's a true car guy if ever there was one. Great collection, great video content and a real down to earth guy considering.
