Life with a BMW iX1: Month 6
As an entry point to BMW’s EV line-up, the iX1 makes sense on paper. But did it make sense in the real world? Let’s find out - 13 December
The iX1 has hauled me along for 7000 miles over the past six months: having been as far south as the Lizard in Cornwall and as far north as Keswick, Cumbria, it has literally taken me from one end of England to another.
It was a rocky start, but living with the iX1 soon revealed its practical, attractive qualities in day-to-day driving. For the many long journeys we enjoyed together, the iX1 proved that its trump card is its brilliant powertrain. While it does fall short in the range department, it tackled pretty much any challenge with ease.
Step on the accelerator in any drive mode - from the slightly more laid-back Economy to the more hair-raising Sport - and you'll never have an issue overtaking or pushing ahead of other drivers at a set of traffic lights, but it's also easy to drive in London's 20mph zones.
Some electric cars can be a bit bland because they're often silent and uninspiring to drive. The iX1 was far from boring: in fact, there wasn't a week that went by without me finding out something new about the car, both good and bad, be it a hidden gem that made my life marginally easier or a feature that frustrated me.

btw the claimed max range on the sport model is 252m i think, 272 is for the SE model
I've now been running an iX1 M Sport for 7 months. It's a complex car in many ways but I have become less frustrated with the plethora of menu driven controls. Why not a simple circular touch control in the centre console...cost I suppose but at £60k it ain't a cheap car. I love the regenerative braking linked to the satnav and find it very smooth. The strong points are superb refinement and comfort for a small car, good economy if I don't thrash it down the motorway and that instant performance that will either get me into trouble one day or save me. The boost paddle on the steering column impressed my 10 year old grandson ! I don't rave about the quality of materials inside, they're very smart but look cheap compared with a 3 series. It's been 100% trouble-free but I'm taking it into my dealer next week because the Bridgestone tyres are wearing out at an astonishing rate...they will be illegal at less than 10,000 miles. I'm no boy racer, I'm 71 years old and normally get at least 30,000 miles out of tyres. I hope they don't try and fob me off with " they're all like that" Also the suspension is very clonky on a slightly rough surface. We'll see what they have to say.
50% over the price it should be, and add in leases at 7% interest instead of 1%.
LOL. Good luck with that.
