Sport model looks reasonable, but big wheels and sports suspension ruin ride and 2.0-litre diesel lacks refinement.

What’s new?

The S40 has been on sale for some time, but this is our first opportunity to drive the Sport version, which brings firmer suspension, 18in alloys, a bodykit and a new cloth interior.

Do the changes work?

In a word, no. The ‘Dynamic Chassis’ and big wheels create a firm, fidgety ride at any speed. The cloth seats feel like vinyl and the 2.0-litre diesel isn’t as refined as the 1.6.

Should I buy one?

We wouldn’t. In cheaper formats the S40 is an appealing car, but the diesel motor and ‘sporty’ addenda seem a pointless combination.
