The VW Beetle R concept seen at Frankfurt and Los Angeles motor shows is set for production

Volkswagen America boss Jonathan Browning has confirmed that the hot Volkswagen Beetle R will eventually make production. According to Browning, the car which has been revealed here in LA is a "a glimpse of what a production version will look like.

"Today it's still a concept, but I talk about it in those terms with a twinkle in my eye," he added.

The first Frankfurt show sighting of the VW Beetle R concept featured design flourishes including wider bumpers, and wheel arches, air intakes to cool the engine and brakes, racing seats and four exhaust pipes. Read our Frankfurt story about the VW Beetle R

It is now on display at the Los Angeles motor show, and reaction is said to be key to it making production as the US was the original Beetle’s main market, a trend that is expected to continue with the current model.

The production model’s styling is expected to be slightly toned down, and is likely to be powered by the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, that powers the VW Golf R and VW Scirocco R. That means is should have around 265bhp.
