Alfa Romeo's super-high performance 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 165bhp per litre

Alfa Romeo has revealed plans for a super-high performance 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine, according to reports in the Italian press.

The new engine, which has been designed for both transverse and longitudinal installation, will produce 296bhp, a remarkable 165bhp per litre.

An all-aluminium unit, it will be fitted with high-pressure (200bar) fuel injection and is thought to use the unique Multiair variable valve timing set-up.

Alfa says that new engine will meet both the ultra-strict European EU6 and US Tier2Bin5 air pollution regulations.

The engine is expected to make its debut in the new Giulia, which replaces the 159 range in early 2014.

However, the fact that it can be mounted longitudinally, also makes it a racing certainty to be fitted to Alfa’s upcoming rear-drive flagship saloon, which is based on the Chrysler 300C.
