Fisker's new electric car will be based on the Karma saloon. A cabrio version is also planned

Fisker has unveiled a new production model, the Fisker Surf, at the Frankfurt motor show.

The Fisker Surf is a variant on today’s Karma saloon, around 5m long, and built around the same range-extender electric drivetrain and aluminium spaceframe structure.

The new model will go on sale next year and will be built alongside the Karma at the Valmet facility, in Finland. According to company sources, Fisker expects to sell around 3500 examples of the new model each year, along with around 7000 Karma saloons annually.

By 2015 these two cars will be joined by a cabrio model, which was previewed as the Sunset concept at the Detroit show in 2009.

Last month Fisker revealed an engine deal with BMW, which will see the Munich-based company suppling a version of its new-generation 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine for use Fisker’s range of smaller models due in 2013.

Codenamed Nina, the new line-up will use the same 20kWh battery pack and range-extending engine/generator layout, but will be sized between the Audi A5 and A6 and go on sale in late 2013. Initially, three models will be based on the new Nina architecture, the first of which will be a ‘radically styled’ saloon. The Nina family will be built at the ex-GM factory in Delaware, which latterly built the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters.

When the Karma and Nina ranges are on full-stream in 2015, Fisker hopes to be building just over 100,000 cars per year. The company says it has now secured 45 dealers in the US and 45 in Europe, with 20 dealers planned immediately in China. It also says that before the dealer network took over sales operations earlier this year, it had 3500 deposits for the Karma saloon. Further out, beyond 2015, Fisker has early plans for a third model line.
