New range-topping 508 RXH crossover gets Audi Allroad features and a diesel-electric powertrain

Peugeot has revealed its new high-riding Peugeot 508 RXH crossover, a luxurious flagship model that will top the 508 line-up when it goes on sale in April 2012 and fill a gap in the firm's range previously occupied by the 607.

Powering the diesel-electric hybrid 508 RXH is the same 2.0-litre HDi HYbrid4 drivetrain with an electric motor and nickel metal hydride battery pack as found in the 3008 HYbrid4. Its combined power output of 197bhp and the engine and electric motor provide a combined 332lb ft of torque.

The 508 RXH is capable of traveling on electric power only over short distances. Its combined economy figure is 67.2mpg and CO2 emissions are 109 g/km.

The new car is higher and wider than the 508 SW, with special features including LED lights, which Peugeot claims gives the impression of "three vertical ‘lion claws’ on each side of its ‘floating’ grille", 18-inch alloys and tinted windows.

Its suspension is also raised and there is black cladding for the door sills and wheel arches, in the style of the Audi A6 Allroad.

Inside, the Peugeot 508 RXH gets leather seats, panoramic glass roof and sat-nav.

The 508 RXH is the latest addition in Peugeot's so-called ‘hors series’ of models, which aim to make more luxurious, sporty and profitable cars off standard platforms. The first hors series Peugeot was the RCZ.

Pricing hasn’t yet been confirmed, but expect to pay a premium over the current top-spec 508 SW, which costs £29,985.

The Peugeot 508 RXH will be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September.Read about the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4
